Tourism: Making holidays where the sun shines?

As statistics show: Holiday in Germany is becoming ever popular. One central question is: Does wheather play a role in the selection of the holiday resort?

The present combination of maps shows the number of nights spent in hotels and guest houses as well as the sunshine duration.

Connection between the two maps could give a useful answer to the question whether many holiday makers are drawn to places in Germany, where the sun often keeps shining all day long. However, there are two restrictions: Some vacationers take their decisions according to other preferences. They go to the sea or travel up into the mountains because they like such landscapes. Or they decide in favour of a certain city with a specific cultural offer, which means independently of the local wheather conditions. Business travellers, too, do not select their overnight accomodation in accordance with the duration of sunshine.

Validity of the data

The map of the sunny hours shows the mean annual sunshine duration in the relevant place, the data being based on measuring values of the years 1971 to 2000.
Overnight accomodation numbers refer to hotels, restaurants and pensions with at least eight bedrooms. Overnight stays in small private quarters and in holiday flats with fewer than eight beds are not statistically recorded.
